How Have Celebrities Influenced Cosmetic Treatments?

From red carpets to paparazzi to Instagram Stories, celebrities influence the way the world views beauty. Their perfect skin, shapely bodies, and flawless makeup inspire us all to put in a little extra effort in the mornings, amirite? Whether you follow A-listers religiously or hear things through the grapevine, celebrities are directly influencing trends around us.

Curious about how celebrities truly influence cosmetic treatments? Here are some examples to better understand the modern world of beauty and exactly where trends come from.

Where do beauty trends come from?

Traditionally, beauty trends were developed behind the scenes. Beauty lewks would first appear on the catwalk at runway shows around the world. Then, these bold, avant-garde beauty trends would appear on the pages of glossy magazines to be shared with the masses.

People looked to models, designers, and magazine editors to set beauty trends. Now, they no longer hold (all) the power.

Today, celebrities and influencers are the driving factors of beauty trends according to research. Trends are created from the content shared on social media. 🤳

Don't believe me? Just look at the Kardashians. Whether you cringe at the name or run to E! News, credit is due. That family had some serious glow-ups. They are one of the inspirations for today's aesthetic desires of hourglass curves and big lips.

Celebrities inspired bigger lips

Kylie Jenner is undoubtedly the Lip QUEEN 👑 and has built a billion-dollar empire from lip injections. But she wasn't the first celebrity to wow the world and make us want bigger lips.

In 2006, Angelina Jolie was crowned People's "World's Most Beautiful Star" and has been winning similar titles ever since. She was praised for her luscious lips that seemed rare before lip injections went mainstream.

Lip injections didn't hit until the 90s when human collagen was first introduced (let's not even talk about the things people used to inject into lips). Today's pout started in 2015 with, you guessed it, Kylie Jenner.

In 2015, Kylie finally confessed to having her lips done. Within 24 hours, there was a 70% rise in inquiries for lip fillers. If that isn't "influence," I don't know what is.

Thank the media for the Brazilian Butt Lift

While lip fillers gained traction, so did Brazilian Butt Lifts, or BBLs.

According to the International Society of Aesthetic and Cosmetic Surgery in 2019, buttock surgery showed the highest growth of all surgical procedures increasing by 38.4% in 2019 (65.9% growth since 2015).

We like big butts and we cannot lie. Why? Celebrities.

Media coverage of celebrities like Cardi B or Nicki Minaj (or 61 other famous Instagram behinds) focuses on their derrieres explaining BBL's rise in popularity. Their figures are results of artificial means, but that doesn't mean we don't want it. 🍑

We even buy our beauty products from celebrities

Celebrities have always had a reigning influence within the cosmetic community starring as the "face" for cosmetic lines and perfume ads. Today, celebrities aren't just gracing billboards and commercials - they're launching their own cosmetic lines.

It seems like every celebrity has their own beauty line these days. There's Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner, and Rare by Selena Gomez. Even social media influencers are taking a share of the pie: Huda Kattan's Huda Beauty, James Charles and his collab with Morphe, and countless more.

Point made: we buy beauty products designed and sold by celebrities. Of course, they influence us!
